What is Cove Lighting?
LED cove lighting refers to hidden illumination that directs light upwards. This design adds dimension to interior architecture and design by adding a layer of accent lighting in otherwise unreachable places that function to blend general lighting with decorative lighting and fill the entirety of the room with a sense of completion. Architectural features or an entire ceiling can be showcased with this type of hidden illumination.

Where is cove lighting typically found?
In homes – Indirect cove lighting can be add elegance and dimension to dining rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, offices, and libraries. However, there are some more unique applications to consider as well. In home theaters or media rooms, the use of colored cove lighting (usually blue) adds an exciting element to the movie-watching experience. When installed on exposed beams in the ceiling, LED cove lighting illuminates architectural features that usually go unnoticed, adding a whole new dimension to the space.
LED cove lighting installed beneath cabinets along the toe kicks or on the underside of stair steps can provide both form in terms of enhanced aesthetic and function in terms of increased safety and way-finding capabilities.
In businesses – In commercial buildings, diode strip lighting is ideal for lobbies, meeting rooms or office settings. Office workers are often subjected to harsh, withering fluorescent lighting that makes everything appear lifeless. It's a struggle to be productive while being washed out by this cold lighting. Installing Cove Lighting in New Buildings

Installing cove lighting in these areas adds aesthetic and contributes an additional functional element to the building– provided you use a flexible cove lighting source that can be adapted to virtually any environment.

In new construction homes and offices that have extraordinarily narrow coves or valances, linear strips offer a distinct advantage over fluorescent light fixtures. Fluorescent transformers and fixtures are clearly visible in these narrow coves and can detract from the ambiance effect of the light itself. The same quality of lighting can be achieved with a Phantom cove light without revealing its visible presence because it can be field cut or notched to bend and follow any radius along a serpentine cove. Its narrow design also makes it ideal for kitchen soffits, beam trusses, and valances.

Phantom LED Cove Lights vs. Rope Lights
Rope lights are good sources of light for tight spots in ceilings because their plastic manufacture allows them to be bent. They are also are ideal for short-term specialty display lighting and decorative holiday lighting. The endless variety of style and bulb options makes them a favorite for event planners for special occasions throughout the year.
Perhaps their most widespread application in residential settings is for decorative outdoor lighting – rope lights bring aesthetic and supplemental light to any outdoor area such as a gazebo, a back porch, or a patio where home entertainment events are hosted. They also provide a measure of safety lighting when they installed along handrails and steps, and some people even use them to decorate gutters and trellises for an extra touch of sophistication.
Because they are so inexpensive and easy to install, rope lights are often used by builders as adjunct decorations or for cove lighting in spec homes. However, the flexibility they are renowned for has it limitations. If the rope is bent incorrectly, it can fail to work altogether. In tight coves or area where the wall is striated, these lights will accentuate wall variances and reflect an uneven distribution of light. If "hot" burning bulbs like xenon and incandescent are used, the plastic housing will begin to turn brown from exposure to ultraviolet light over a period of time.
When used in this manner, rope lights are short lived and will eventually require replacement. This additional cost cancels out the initial front-end savings they normally deliver. Rope lights are also wired in series, so if a single light fails, the entire string fails. At this point a splice can be placed in the line to restore functionality, but the uniformity of the light is compromised and quality begins to diminish. For these reasons, it's best to consider a more longer-lasting option when it comes to LED cove lighting.
