LED Cove Lighting Adds Dimension to Your Rooms

Indirect LED cove lighting is like a bow on a meticulously wrapped present.

It's the perfect accent piece that supports every other element of a space's look and is beautiful in its own right. Phantom's LED cove lighting systems are specifically designed to produce this kind of accent light, with impressive power and a low profile that makes them easy to conceal.

Once installed in a residential setting, Phantom's LED cove lighting will bring out the subtle features in a room, making colors appear more vivid and imparting an intimate, cozy feel. In commercial applications, Phantom's LED cove lighting can be used to great effect, creating a professional and elegant appearance.

LED Cove Lighting

What is Cove Lighting?

LED cove lighting refers to hidden illumination that directs light upwards. This design adds dimension to interior architecture and design by adding a layer of accent lighting in otherwise unreachable places that function to blend general lighting with decorative lighting and fill the entirety of the room with a sense of completion. Architectural features or an entire ceiling can be showcased with this type of hidden illumination.

In this elegant dining room, you can see how cove lighting truly enhances the space and holds its own in the hierarchy of lighting. Even among the wall sconces, accent lights, and an ornate chandelier, the LED cove lighting stands out brilliantly in the room and adds dimension to the ceiling.

Where is cove lighting typically found?

In homes – Indirect cove lighting can be add elegance and dimension to dining rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, offices, and libraries. However, there are some more unique applications to consider as well. In home theaters or media rooms, the use of colored cove lighting (usually blue) adds an exciting element to the movie-watching experience. When installed on exposed beams in the ceiling, LED cove lighting illuminates architectural features that usually go unnoticed, adding a whole new dimension to the space.

LED cove lighting installed beneath cabinets along the toe kicks or on the underside of stair steps can provide both form in terms of enhanced aesthetic and function in terms of increased safety and way-finding capabilities.

In businesses – In commercial buildings, diode strip lighting is ideal for lobbies, meeting rooms or office settings. Office workers are often subjected to harsh, withering fluorescent lighting that makes everything appear lifeless. It's a struggle to be productive while being washed out by this cold lighting. Phantom's diode fixtures are much more inviting and show that a company cares about the impression it makes. This is also important when interacting with clients, so diode strips are also a good fit in lobbies.

Many companies choose to backlight their logo or artwork in their office lobbies, creating an eye catching effect that can leave a meaningful impression. In more informal commercial settings, like restaurants, backlighting can make an enormous impact on how people perceive the business.

Installing Cove Lighting in New Buildings

Phantom's linear LED cove lighting strips are ideal cove lights to install in new construction projects. Most public buildings, new houses, and new office buildings have some type of cove or variance at or near the ceiling. Installing cove lighting in these areas adds aesthetic and contributes an additional functional element to the building– provided you use a flexible cove lighting source that can be adapted to virtually any environment.

It also adds value to new construction pricing when you install a cove lighting source that can be controlled by the user, and that can be custom made to seamlessly mount to any environment and any radius bend. Phantom linear cove lighting strips fulfill all three of these requirements in the form of a low-profile and flexible light strip that will fit in building coves as small as 3" from the ceiling and wall.

In new construction homes and offices that have extraordinarily narrow coves or valances, linear strips offer a distinct advantage over fluorescent light fixtures. Fluorescent transformers and fixtures are clearly visible in these narrow coves and can detract from the ambiance effect of the light itself. The same quality of lighting can be achieved with a Phantom cove light without revealing its visible presence because it can be field cut or notched to bend and follow any radius along a serpentine cove. Its narrow design also makes it ideal for kitchen soffits, beam trusses, and valances.

"My home doesn't have any true architectural coves, but I'm still interested in the aesthetic benefits of indirect cove lighting. Is there a solution for me?"Yes! Phantom LED linear light strips can be installed along the top of cabinets to create a similar visual effect to an architectural cove. Because the light is directed upward towards the ceiling, this adds a subtle yet noticeable dimension to any room in your home. This is a great option for rooms with a lot of built-in cabinetry, like kitchens and bathrooms.

Why LED is the Premiere Option in Cove Lighting

Further value is added with your choice in lamp types – cove lighting fixtures by Phantom can be fitted with incandescent, xenon, or LED festoon lamps. However, LED is the best option on the market in terms of cove lighting. If you are working on any level with new construction LEED certification, you really want to take the time to look at our proprietary LED festoon lamping technology.

We have created a lamp design that combines multiple bulb combinations into a single festoon unit that can be fitted to any cove lighting strip. These festoon lamps are so efficient they rival the lumens output of incandescent lamps and nearly approximate those of xenon. This gives the lighting designer who is bidding an install for a new construction project the full range of cove lighting accent options ranging from cool and warm color accents to state-of-the-art green technology that mimics traditional technology with minimal forward throw heat and 80% less total power costs.

Another excellent advantage that Phantom cove lights offer is energy savings without compromise of lighting quality. Far more attractive than fluorescent equivalents, they are nonetheless competitively efficient due to their low-voltage engineering design and their fully dimmable lighting control mechanisms.

Even greater cost savings can be instantly generating by having these fixtures manufactured with new 2800K LED festoons—a light source equivalent to xenon in color rendering capability. In terms of commercial applications, we see more and more restaurants and hotels choosing LED to save on energy costs and buffer their overhead against a sluggish market.

Phantom LED Cove Lights vs. Rope Lights
Rope lights are good sources of light for tight spots in ceilings because their plastic manufacture allows them to be bent. They are also are ideal for short-term specialty display lighting and decorative holiday lighting. The endless variety of style and bulb options makes them a favorite for event planners for special occasions throughout the year.

Perhaps their most widespread application in residential settings is for decorative outdoor lighting – rope lights bring aesthetic and supplemental light to any outdoor area such as a gazebo, a back porch, or a patio where home entertainment events are hosted. They also provide a measure of safety lighting when they installed along handrails and steps, and some people even use them to decorate gutters and trellises for an extra touch of sophistication.

Because they are so inexpensive and easy to install, rope lights are often used by builders as adjunct decorations or for cove lighting in spec homes. However, the flexibility they are renowned for has it limitations. If the rope is bent incorrectly, it can fail to work altogether. In tight coves or area where the wall is striated, these lights will accentuate wall variances and reflect an uneven distribution of light. If "hot" burning bulbs like xenon and incandescent are used, the plastic housing will begin to turn brown from exposure to ultraviolet light over a period of time.

When used in this manner, rope lights are short lived and will eventually require replacement. This additional cost cancels out the initial front-end savings they normally deliver. Rope lights are also wired in series, so if a single light fails, the entire string fails. At this point a splice can be placed in the line to restore functionality, but the uniformity of the light is compromised and quality begins to diminish. For these reasons, it's best to consider a more longer-lasting option when it comes to LED cove lighting.
